Course Overview

The adaptive immune system plays a central and often underappreciated role in the pathogenesis of ocular surface disease. This Masterclass provides a rigorous exploration of T cell biology as it applies to the ocular surface — from normal immunosurveillance to the dysregulated inflammatory cascades that drive chronic disease. Clinicians who understand these mechanisms are better equipped to select immunomodulatory therapies rationally and to anticipate the clinical course of inflammatory ocular surface conditions.

Clinical Relevance

Dry eye disease, meibomian gland dysfunction, and related ocular surface conditions are increasingly understood as inflammatory disorders with adaptive immune components. The therapeutic agents used to manage these conditions — cyclosporine, lifitegrast, and others — target specific immunologic pathways. A working knowledge of T cell biology transforms these therapies from empiric choices into mechanistically informed decisions.
